The Cleaning Product Dilemma

When you go to your local grocery store or discount store for cleaning products, you are liable to find two or three aisle dedicated to cleaning. There’s a product for everything you could possibly think of cleaning. From things for your floor and carpet to items for your bathrooms and kitchen. There are things to brighten and things to eliminate odors. They come in aerosols, liquids, and powders. You stand there with a blank look on your face, wondering which product to choose. Do you get the one on sale or do you buy the one that guarantees to do whatever it is you’re looking for? Do you get the one with the sweet scent or get the one that smells like a factory but is guaranteed to be the best?
Now more than ever the factors to consider is are the cleaning products safe for you and your family and are they good for the environment? In the last ten years we’ve seen our environment take a dramatic turn for the worst. The Ozone layer is thinning. Global warming in on the rise. Do you ever stop to consider that the things we do in our own homes can have a huge impact on our health and the health of the environment? Now more than ever we need to take special care to the things we use in our homes. “Going Green” is a term that means using environmentally and often chemical free products in our homes and businesses. Green cleaning products typically do not emit the strong chemical odors of traditional products. They are a lot better for the health of you, your family and your pets.
Toxins can be found in many of the products currently on the market. Sure they do an excellent job and cleaning whatever it is you purchased the product for but are they safe for you? Cleaning your home doesn’t mean causing yourself more harm then good. We all love a clean, fresh smelling home but we also love living life to the fullest. Going green is not a new trend – it’s a way of life. By changing the way you purchase your cleaning products, you can make an impact not only on the environment but in your home as well. Having products we can trust around our children is vital to the way we live our lives.
Now days, too many chemicals are being used in almost everything around us. It’s time for us to make a conscious effort to take close look at the products we are bringing into our homes and placing back into our environment. So the next time you are on the cleaning product aisle, take the time to really read what the products are made of. Remember these things are used in our home but are also transferred into our environment through the trash, our water and septic systems, and more. So be conscious of what you’re using. In the end you’ll be glad you did and we’re all worth it.

Natural cleaning products are more beneficial to us than ever before.

The Green Expo – thegreenexpo.net – A Bait and Switch Sham

The Green Expo (thegreenexpo.net) is advertised as a FREE outdoor event with a VIP area costing $5. Turns out the VIP area was the actual Expo, considering that 95% of the venders were in this area. Every single person I talked with – attendee or vender – thought the expo was a free event. This is classic bait and switch advertising, and it incensed me so much, I made this video! I actually went there to interview venders, but it was so EXTREMELY LOUD from the three music stages that it would have been impossible to get any good interviews. I guess I had my camera there for another good reason: to show a classic bait and switch advertising scam, and maybe help venders lined up for future events make a more informed decision on whether or not they want to participate in such a falsely advertised event. Organic Vegetable Gardening: Getting Started

Imagine biting into a perfect ripe strawberry, still warm from the summer sun without having to worry about chemical or pesticide residues. More people are turning to organic gardening for the peace of mind it provides, knowing that their home-grown food is free of potentially dangerous chemicals. By following a few simple guidelines and with little cost, you can have your own organic piece of gardening paradise.

At it’s most basic, organic vegetable gardening is a way to grow plants without the use of chemicals. In practice, what makes organic gardening different is that it uses a variety of natural methods to support the growing needs of plants. What’s wrong with using chemicals?

Most pesticides that are used to kill insects also kill many beneficial insects and bacteria. Continued use of chemical fertilizers actually reduces soil quality, requiring the use of larger and larger amounts of fertilizer to provide the nutrients that are normally present in the soil. A vicious cycle begins, with more chemicals being added to a soil that is increasingly void of life.Fertilize Organically

Every garden soil is different, so before you start to fertilize, it’s important to know the nature of your soil. The best way to find out what your soil needs is to have it tested by your local cooperative extension office. Be sure to ask that recommendations be in the form of organic amendments rather than for agricultural chemicals.

The most important nutrients a plant needs are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Nitrogen can be obtained by adding manure, alfalfa meal or fish emulsion. Bonemeal, a by-product of animal slaughterhouses, is rich in both phosphorous and calcium. Potassium can be supplied by kelp meal, made from dried seaweed. There are also many natural fertilizer products available that supply the right balance of the nutrients, all in one package.Start with the Soil

There is a saying among organic gardeners, “take care of the soil and the plants will take care of themselves”. Soil is the foundation for plants which is why so much of organic gardening focuses on improving soil. A sure-fire way to improve your soil is by adding lots of organic matter such as compost. This improves the soil’s ability to store nutrients and helps retain moisture during droughts. Add as much compost as you can and you will be amazed by the results.Putting Weeds and Insects in their Place

There are a number of ways to control insects without having to resort to pesticides. One way is to encourage beneficial insects, like common ladybugs, that feed on problem insects such as aphids. You can attract beneficial insects by planting marigolds, yarrow, fennel, parsley or Black-eyed Susan. Use physical barriers to keep problem insects from your most susceptible plants by using row covers and netting. If necessary, use natural pest control products such as insecticidal soap to let them know who’s boss.

What is the best way to control weeds organically? Mulch, mulch and more mulch! Mulch is a thick blanket of material such as leaves, grass clippings, straw or bark chips spread over the soil. It’s benefits include retaining moisture, moderating soil temperature and blocking sunlight from reaching the soil, which helps to reduce weeds. Any weeds that do grow through the mulch will be weaker from lack of sunlight and should be easy to pull out by hand. Besides, pulling weeds is good exercise and gives you an excuse to skip the gym! If weeds do start popping up in unwanted places such as between paving stones or interlocking brick there are many natural weed killers available at your local garden center.

You are now on your way to enjoying the fruits of your labor. Organic gardening doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Anyone with a patch of soil and some inspiration can grow healthy chemical free vegetables. Start this Spring and enjoy a healthy bounty by Summer.

In Focus: Natural Arthritis Treatments And How To Cope With The Disease

How to Live Life with No Arthritis Pain Relief in Sight, Part II: Cope with it.
How does one live with a lingering ailment that has no known cure to date? It may not be as life-threatening as AIDS or the Big C, but Arthritis has its own life-altering effects. Pain can change how one relates with other people, more so with himself. Studies have shown arthritis sufferers having bouts of depression, feeling of isolation and hopelessness. Sadly, total
relief from arthritis pain still remains an illusive dream.
COPE WITH IT. True, it is easier said than done, as most debilitating diseases have manifested in the lives of their victims, but often than not, it is the will power to go on living meaningfully, despite of the pain, NOT medicine, which makes the difference. It has been proven that if one surrenders to the disease, his mind accepting defeat, no medicine can work wonders. Healing and decay both permeate in the mind, often with a hairline difference. What tilts the balance is YOUR choice.
Here are four (4) ways of rising above arthritis pain:
Think like a Winner. The reverse is often true when one is burdened with arthritis. When your hip, thumb and knees are throbbing with pain, it is difficult to focus on things you can do; rather you concentrate on things you cannot do anymore. Giving up on yourself becomes so easy; as pain engulfs you, your mind is drawn to it and for a while, it consumes you. It is typically normal to feel that way, for a while at least, however, you should rein in your feelings. Coping with arthritis or any other debilitating diseases is definitely not giving up on your motivation to keep up with your goals in life, but rather to redefine your approach, your strategies, in achieving those goals.
Reach your goals WITH arthritis. Accomplish things WITH arthritis. Just make room for a little adjustment, but definitely go on with your life. Simply put, nothing can beat you in the arena of your belief. Keep on believing in your dreams, no matter what circumstance besets you – Helen Keller learned to read while she was deaf, blind and mute; Beethoven made music even deaf.
Exercise. Staying active is being physically mobile. Of course, arthritis can limit most of your usual functions, slow down your pace, but never allow a sore limb immobilize you totally. Consult with a doctor specializing on arthritis care the proper exercise for you. Apart from exercise, ask your doctor about arthritis diets. Often it is said, “we are what we eat”. Avoiding foods in your diet, which can kick off an attack will definitely help.
Strive to remain independent. Staying active is not allowing your feeling of helplessness to take root in your subconscious mind and permeate there. Otherwise, you will believe that you can no longer do things on your own and must depend on another person. This will cause your self-confidence to atrophy. Instead, struggle to do things you normally do, at a slower pace, but get them done anyway.
Ward off pessimism. Living with chronic pain can affect attitudes, thus an arthritis sufferer might sound awful during an attack. It is not only the pain, which can cause a shift in behavior. At most times, it is the feeling of powerlessness over the disease.
Sadly, it affects the people around you. Friends, family and significant others can become easy targets of harsh words. However, there are two (2) ways, which you and your loved ones can do:
1. Adjust. Loved ones should learn to adjust and accept your situation so as to give allowances to your mood swings. It could be difficult for them too, to be around an arthritis sufferer, but when they convey their patience to you and let you realize they understand your situation and would support you through it, it could be good for everyone;
2. Communicate. Burn the lines of communication between you and your loved ones. Remember how you used to “burn the lines” talking to your first crush? Lots ofarthritis pain relief can be bought from leading drugstores worldwide, but nothing alleviates the feeling of helplessness more effectively than talking it out.
Re-discover Arthritis everyday. “The best way to conquer an opponent is to know him.” Sounded good in battles ages past, sounds even better in your battle against arthritis, today.
To manage the disease, you should learn all you can about it. Discover new breakthroughs, which may not treat arthritis totally, but definitely allow you to live life with arthritis more bearably, than it was yesterday.
Natural arthritis treatments are making waves on the internet, nowadays. Discover it. Make that move today. To wait on tomorrow can be too late.
Arthritis can rob you of so much, if you let it. Coping with it is significantly the best way to overcome it.

Water Gardens Designed For Wildlife

Water gardens designed for wildlife are sure to bring you many hours of viewing pleasure. Birds will take a sip of water from even a simple tub, and they’ll bathe in a splashing fountain. Butterflies love shallow pools. Insects and other animals-dragonflies, frogs, salamanders-will be drawn to your water garden and to the plants that accompany it.
Of course, water gardens designed for wildlife may also attract wildlife you would rather not deal with. Raccoons, mosquitoes, cats that love fish, and even the occasional rambunctious, water-loving dog may also become visitors to your water garden. But all in all, water gardens extend the ecosystem delightfully into your own backyard.
Water gardens designed for wildlife in a country setting may attract abundant wildlife because animals are more plentiful in locations near their natural habitat. Yet even a big-city water garden draws birds, butterflies, and other animals.Style, Size and Location Can Make a Difference
A large garden may attract a more diverse selection of wild things, but a small garden will surprise you with the number of animals it lures.
Wildlife won’t know whether your water garden is formal or informal, of course. But the more that it resembles a country pond, the greater the number and variety of creatures it will attract because of the greater variety of habitats it offers. The Depth of Your Water Garden
If you’re planning a water garden that will support fish and plants as well as other wildlife activity, you’ll need to consider constructing it to contain a variety of depths. Fish need at least 18 inches of water to survive. To over-winter them in areas where the pool freezes, they will need a place on the bottom deeper than that. Plants over-wintering in the garden pond will need deep areas, too.
In a climate with winter temperatures of minus 10° to minus 20° F, the pond will need to be 24 inches deep. In regions where average minimum temperatures of minus 30° to minus 40° F, the pool should have areas that are 30 to 36 inches deep. Check with your local extension service or water garden supplier to be sure the water garden you’re planning will have depths suitable to your garden and your region.
Many amphibians, small animals, and birds like gradual approaches to water. An inclined beach of small stones provides a natural entry into the pool for them.
Although the location, style, and size of your http://www.garden-fountains.com/Categories.bok?category=Garden+Fountains all contribute somewhat to your success with wildlife. Having a diversity of depths, rocks, and plants will be key to attracting wildlife to your water gardens.Plants for Your Water Garden
Native plants, which offer food and shelter natural to the birds and animals of your region, draw wildlife to your garden pond. Trees and shrubs are especially good because they provide homes for nesting wildlife as well as food and cover.
Perennials and annuals are attractions, too. Their patches of color draw birds and butterflies to feed on seeds and flower nectar. Grasses and hedges, especially evergreen or semi-evergreen species, provide cover at the water’s edge for the better part of the year. Marginal plants (those that grow in the shallows of the water garden) also offer cover and food. Plants with floating leaves shade the water and serve as insect landing pads. Those with smaller leaves, like duckweed, are food for ducks and fish. Submerged plants release small amounts of oxygen into the water, which support insect larvae.
• Swamp milkweed or butterfly plant (Asclepias incarnata) grows about 3 feet high, and its yellow-to-orange, red, yellow, or white flowers attract butterflies for the nectar. This plant requires full-sun.
• Water mint (Mentha aquatica) grows about 1 foot high and bears small, light lavender flowers in mid- to late summer with nectar that is attractive to bees. It spreads rapidly and can be invasive. It should be planted no deeper than 3 inches.
• Water lily (Nymphaea spp.) spreads from 1 to 50 square feet, depending on the variety. Its flowers come in many colors and grow from 1 to 10 inches across. It prefers full sun and still water and makes a good place for frogs and other small animals to rest. Hardiness depends on the variety.
